2 casualties were taken to St Mary’s Hospital following a road traffic collision between a van and an electric wheelchair in Shanklin this morning (Monday).
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary was called to Green Lane, near the junction with Oaklyn Gardens, at 09:27 following reports of a collision between a van and a pedestrian – understood to be in an electric wheelchair.
At the scene, both the driver of the Ford Transit Connect and the wheelchair user were treated by paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service before being taken to St Mary’s as a precaution.
The road was blocked for a time meaning Southern Vectis buses had to divert.
The road has since reopened following the recovery of the significantly damaged wheelchair.

Surprised they didn’t call the air ambulance, the coast guard, the fire service, ….. the van drivers injuries must have been truly horrific.
I hope the person in the wheelchairs is OK.
It can only happen on the Isle of Wight
All van drivers need to take a re-test.
Bet you don’t even drive lol
I drive a small van correctly, unlike many van drivers.
only van drivers i think all need a retest there all bad
they’re all bad
Let me guess you’re a bus anker get a life sad old man
If there were more dropped kerbs, then wheelchairs like that would not have to go on the road. If no dropped kerb available, wheelchair users have no other option than to go in the road.
Some of these can go on the road as long as they have insurance etc
Wheelchairs like to one involved, are not permitted to use the roads, unless there is no alternative. There is a minimum speed requirement for wheelchair and scooters to be able to use the roads. And no, insurance is not compulsory for pavement chairs and scooters, although it is recommended. Scooters need to be Class 3 to be road legal.
There ARE dropped kirbs all along Green Lane.
Fine, but I was speaking from normal experience. I don’t personally know Green Lane, so please excuse me for that.
Van man strikes again, pain in the ass….
Most van drivers are Numpties, they think they own the Road.
I would make all van drivers pay higher Road Fund fees
and your the islands best driver
and you’re
Bob one and Bob two need a life
The Road Fund was a British Government fund designated to pay for the building and maintenance of the United Kingdom road network. Its income came originally from Vehicle Excise Duty, until that ceased to be hypothecated for roads use in 1936, and then from government grants. It was created by the Roads Act 1920 and Finance Act 1920, and was wound up in the Miscellaneous Financial Provisions Act 1955.
Wheelchair person prob just veered intoo Road as some think traffic will simple get out of there way so don’t bother looking
Why make assumptions & blame the poor wheelchair userwhen nobody knows what happened?
It’s pretty obv!
Why make assumptions and blame the van driver
Don’t assume fault lies with the van driver. Some people in their electric chairs/buggies are lethal and have no road (or pavement) sense.
most of the people who drive around in those electric chariots are entitled pavement hoggers that seem to think that having an electric chariot gives them the right to barge pedestrians out of the way
looks like they forgot…van is bigger and stronger
Most mobility scooters come in different classes the small boot scooters are not allowed on the road the bigger 8 mph ones are only supposed to be used on the road and these are class 3 and should be registered with the DVLA and have insurance like mine is but some don’t bother insurance is not dear only £59 a year with blue badge insurance
You got that so wrong mate
Green lane is like the M27
A lot of drivers think it’s 70mph
Usual boy/girl racers, cars motorbikes
Hard to say who was at fault on this
Accident but it’s the first time the Police
Actually turned up…
So many other roads on the island are the same.
Great Preston Road in Ryde is a Motorway with speeding motorists
No Traffic Law on the Island
I like driving in my car dododododo
I don’t see any type of crossing there… why was wheel chair in the road?
I don’t know how the wheelchair got into the road, but too many of these people believe that they have the right to do this and an accident was waiting to happen, eventually!!
Wheelchair probably hit a pothole to send it off course.
Another van driver rushing to get to the bakers….
If you look the heaviest thing most vans carry is the drivers and their takeaways, but it does the image good to drive a van (not)
