UPDATED: An unexploded piece of ordnance, which is thought to be from the war, has been found near to the Isle of Wight Fuels depot in East Cowes this morning (Friday), prompting the area to be cordoned off.
Kingston Road has been closed by Police at the junction with Medina View as officers await the arrival of the Royal Navy Bomb Disposal Team from Portsmouth.
The public are advised to stay clear of the area.
It is thought the ordnance – described as a shell – was discovered during remedial works on land adjacent to Isle of Wight Fuels.
The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service have been made aware of the incident due to its close proximity to the fuel depot, which at this stage has not been evacuated.
The Kingston Power Station remains unaffected however a section of Cadets Walk has been cordoned off.
The area is expected to remain closed for the next couple of hours.
UPDATE @ 14:40 – Royal Navy Bomb Disposal experts have carried out a controlled explosion of the 14″ shell at Yaverland Beach, Sandown this afternoon.
The 50kg object, thought to pre-date World War I, was placed into the water before being detonated.
Crowds gatehered in the car park to see the explosion, which sent dramatic splashes up into the air.
The cordons at East Cowes have now been lifted.
