Detectives investigating the death of Gary ‘Jeff’ Stacey earlier this year have appealed to the public to trace 2 people who might hold information relevant to the investigation.
Mr Stacey, 49, was assaulted in St James’ Street, Newport at 04:00 on Sunday 14th February and died the following day at Southampton General Hospital after being airlifted with serious head injuries.
A 20-year-old man from Newport, who has been questioned by police on suspicion of murder, is on police bail until Wednesday (1st June).
Now, just 4 days before the local suspect is due to answer bail, Hampshire Constabulary have launched an appeal as they would like to speak to a woman who was seen in Yates on the night of Saturday 13th February. It is believed she spoke to the victim in the smoking area to the rear of the pub.
She is described as white, aged in her early 20s, quite tall and had dark, wavy hair and heavy makeup on her eyes and lips. She wore a black jumpsuit with straps, heels and possibly a belt. This woman had tattoos and is thought to have links with local tattoo artists.
Officers would also like to speak to a man who was seen on CCTV walking past the Next store in St James’ Street at around 03:47 on Saturday 14th February, and then by Mings Garden Chinese Restaurant just 2 minutes later (pictured right).
The 2 people mentioned above are asked to contact Police on 101 quoting Operation Smooth, even if they feel they do not have any relevant information for the investigation.
