A road traffic collision on the main road in and out of Newport to the south has led to an emergency closure this afternoon (Wednesday), resulting in significant traffic tailbacks.
Emergency services are in attendance on Blackwater Road, at Shide.
Motorists are advised to avoid the area with traffic backing up from Shide to the Matalan Roundabout at St George’s, with the situation only set to worsen as rush hour approaches.
It comes just a short time after another crash on Forest Road in Newport – the main diversion route to Cowes due to the ongoing works at Horsebridge Hill.
Police have closed Blackwater Road between Shide Road (National Tyres) and Blackwater Hollow (Moles) on the outbound carriageway only.
Southern Vectis says all Route 2 and 3 buses heading out of Newport are diverting via Long Lane and Downend until further notice.
There are delays for motorists heading into Newport, with queues heading back towards the cricket ground.
UPDATE @ 16:20 – Swift efforts have seen the incident cleared, with Blackwater Road re-open in both directions.

Before the usual numpties get their knickers in a twist
I have no idea what happened but I am just stating what
goes on, on a daily basis on island Roads.
I want to see speed cameras on the island,

We know what you want, you say it every day.
Repetition is boring.
