Motorists heading into Newport are facing significant delays this morning (Monday) due to the closure of Fairlee Road, which is resulting in 4-mile tailbacks.
The major A-road in and out of Newport is closed for the next 11 days to allow new water and sewerage connections to be installed.
All traffic heading towards the county town from East Cowes, Wootton and Ryde is having to divert via Staplers Road.
As a result of the bottleneck, which sees all vehicles of all sizes funnel into Snooks Hill and onto Coppins Bridge, queues are forming along Staplers Road and Whiterails Road to Wootton Common – some 2.5 miles away.
Traffic is also starting to extend beyond Wootton Common roundabout and down both Park Road and Station Road, with the queues extending to Racecourse Roundabout and along Whippingham Road to East Cowes. In total, the queue is some 4 miles for those heading to Newport from East Cowes.
Southern Vectis is warning of significant delays on its Route 5 and 9 buses this morning, warning passengers to allow extra time for journeys.
The closure of Fairlee Road by DARES is is required due to the scale of the works being undertaken, which involve excavating trenches of up to 6 metres in depth.

Don’t suppose the traffic people could adjust the traffic lights to allow more cars through on green towards Newport?
i thought that they said they were going to but doesn’t seem that way park road is still gridlocked and staplers all the way back to the mini roundabout at Wootton allowing more time for your Journey means setting off at 7 am
NOPE..
You don’t honestly think the numpties know how to
adjust them!
It took 3 months to repair the traffic lights at Lake.
Traffic lights are not their speciality.
I DON’T KNOW WHAT IS!
That would involve someone having initiative and intelligence. Then they would have to get off their fat arse, stop shirking from home and go and get their hands dirty. So, no, I don’t suppose so.
Endless chaos on the Isle of Blighted roads.
As our very expensive, lack lustre council stay silent.
People complain when there is a water ban or water leaks yet when they do the work they still get moaned at. Having a few delays is not going down in history
By all accounts this is connection work for new build properties and, therefore should have been reason enough to refuse planning permission in the first place.
Exactly sir
Obviously you have nowhere to go or have to be somewhere for a certain time, like work. And this work will have nothing to do with the severe mismanagement of southern water and their water bans. That would still happen if they dug up every road.
As Robertgmam rightly says its for more ‘ let’s fill our pockets while we can” development on our already over crowded island.
Gearing up for 15 minute cities.
Already is ..it’s an island
Emergency services are struggling to get through this mess too!
Try not to need them for the next 11 days people. I don’t know who would be responsible if someone actually died because an ambulance couldn’t reach them in time? Island Road or DARES or the Council?
They won’t be able to get through because the traffic either side can’t move it’s right back to the roundabout in Wootton on Whiterails and then back to butterfly world going out of Newport so nothing would be able to get through the middle station road needs to be a no park zone because it’s gridlocked with the hgvs coming from Fishbourne and east cowes plus buses doesn’t help the road into Ryde is shut so the Lorrie’s have to divert to station road and along briddlesford to get into Ryde ! Not Great planning , as usual .
Planning and Isle of Wight council never fit together.
They have had the whole winter to do all these works, but no, have to do them all at once.
Now is the time to make the whole Island one way!
I am surprised the island doesn’t become like
SARK
Vehicleless!
One way to de-populate!
Amen
Haha that would be a very fast, past the buck between them. Tho Dares are only the contactor. Its the useless halfwits who plan it.
It’s ridiculous to expect us yet again to put up with this it’s never ending.
the term ‘incompetent’ doesn’t even come close to describing the ability of Island Roads and the IWC to manage traffic flow…
Yes, Fairlee is closed
(but why was the work not being done over the weekend, and over night, to get it done as quickly as possible, with as little disruption as possible)
Yes, most of the traffic that would have used Fairlee is now using Staplers (most not all, as with Binstead closed, at least some of the traffic from Ryde will have use an alternate route)
but even with 2-3 times the usual volume of traffic on Staplers, it should actually be moving. (this morning it took me 45 minutes to get from Wootton Common, to Monkey haven… a distance of 0.99 miles..sometime sat for 5 minutes or more & not moving at all))
Often, in ‘normal’ times… the lights at Snooks Hill / Coppins bridge are timed so as to let only one or two cars throuigh from Staplers every cycle,..
with this expected volume of traffic, on staplers, and no thru-traffic from fairlee, if IR/IWC could not change the timing of the lights to make at least some improvement, then they definately shouldn’t be in charge of it…..
So well put, like a lot of the comments here. Obviously we must all be dim and missing some vital part that would make it all understandable. Because only a team of retards could think all these road closures are acceptable. And time and time again, these drooling halfwits shock me with their level of incompetence and lack of foresight.
Have Island Roads been acquired by Sysco?
Island roads are not that incompetent !
More like frank Spencer limited or maybe it was Mr Oreilly
Hahaha bang on!!!
What everyone needs to remember is that Island Roads said that between that closure and St George’s there wouldn’t be any impact!!!
They taking the piss now. What a complete balls up
Probably planned to see how we will cope when
15 minute cities are mandated!
I see the Mayor of New York has pledged to repair 175,000 potholes in the City and has completed 50,000 so far since January.
His counterpart for London, SadDick Khan, has promised to repair one on the North Circular and another in Cable Street Stepney.
His counterpart on the island Wassisname Jordan, sits on his fat arse and lets Island Toads do exactly as they like.
Remember him and his chums Fuller, Bacon, JonesEvans, Lucioni, Stephens and all the rest of these failures on May 7th when you go to vote.
Looking at the candidates for Ryde Swanmore, I think my dog has a better chance to win votes.
Not had any literature from ANY party so once again will probably bin the vote card as there is no sensible option avaliable.
I know, a worrying lack of election toilet paper.
I would vote for your dog.
2 guys of culture = action
Fully agree I hope we can vote these useless fat cats into obscurity. Viva la revolution.
If they turn off all the traffic lights for the 11 days the traffic will flow so much better….we are all capable of managing without them. We can filter without them.
One way to STOP Numpties speeding.
CLOSE EVERY ROAD
Now you are just talking bollocks again. Stop speed limits, let God sort it out.
It would appear that the brains in the heads of iowc and island roads are merely decorative
Part of the problem is that the leader of the council will not work with Island Roads – there is just acrimony.
unless this is resolved this situation will continue. no-one sits down with a map and a calendar and plans anymore.
No-one has the interests of the public as a priority, and Island Roads have no guidance on anything.
