Sainsbury’s petrol station in Newport has re-opened this morning (Saturday) after threats of explosion forced its closure last night.
The station, situated on Hunnycross Way, was evacuated and closed at around 21:30 when information was received through 3 phone calls that the building and forecourt was going to ‘explode’.
Hampshire Constabulary were alerted to the anonymous tip off and deployed officers to the scene to conduct a search, but nothing was found.
Although the incident is suspected to be a hoax, the station was closed overnight as a precaution.
A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s has said:
“We can confirm there was an incident at our petrol filling station in Newport last night. We have reopened this morning and are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused.”.
