Thompson House Tuition Centre, which is now part of the Island Learning Centre, has been given a Good rating by Ofsted in its latest inspection.
An inspection took place on 18th and 19th March at the centre, which is based in the former Lake Middle School site. Although the Ofsted inspection took place for Thompson House, from 1st April this year the Island Learning Centre became effective as a single centre as previously, the Clatterford Tuition Centre was also based there.
Inspectors found that the centre has strong leadership and students make good progress in English, mathematics and science. Students in Year 11 also acquire a wide range of accreditation before they leave which includes some GCSE passes, BTEC and entry-level qualifications. Almost all the students who left the centre after Year 11 found employment.
The report shows how teaching has improved and marking student’s work is particularly effective. The individual needs of students are well met and their personal development has improved because of a strong focus on supporting their spiritual, social moral and cultural development.
“We are extremely pleased with Ofsted’s Good judgment. It is recognition of the hard work and dedication of the staff as well as the drive and aspirations of the students.
“We will continue to strive for improvement in every aspect of our work in providing the best possible education for the most vulnerable students on the Isle of Wight.
Councillor Jonathan Bacon, Isle of Wight Council leader and Executive member for children’s services, said:
“I offer my congratulations to all the students, staff and parents at the Island Learning Centre.
“This is a very good Ofsted report which is a great credit to the school’s leaders and teachers and also vindicates the strategic decisions of the council to reorganise these educational services into a single centre for our more vulnerable children. It also gives the Island Learning Centre a fantastic platform to build on in future years.”
The Island Learning Centre provides support to children who, for whatever reason, are unable to attend school and aims to ensure pupils return and reintegrate into school as soon as possible.
