Sylvia & Alan Williams of Vectis 40s VintageNewport & Carisbrooke Community Council are hosting a free family event to commemorate the 80th anniversary of D-Day. The event will be at Victoria Recreation Ground, from 10:00 to 16:00, with a parade leaving Drill Hall Road at 10:30 and arriving at approximately 10.50. Re-enactment groups will show what life was like during wartime. Join Isle Access for a free craft session where you can add your contribution to a D-Day mural and learn how to Lindy Hop with Jive Revive at 2pm! Enjoy performances from The Bob Howarth Big Band, singer Martin Hoy, Sandown & Shanklin Military Band and Jukebox Jazz whilst learning about top secret auxiliary units trained to live underground, the P.L.U.T.O pipeline and other wartime stories, such as how an off-duty Polish warship defended Cowes. For an exciting way to get to the event, the Southern Vectis ‘Old Girl’ bus is providing free transport from Church Litten to Recreation Ground Rd and back again throughout the day. There is free parking in Vectis Field off Wellington Road (PO30 5QT) where the event can be accessed directly. For further information contact NCCC on 559119.
