Firefighters have extinguished a tent fire at the entrance to a public car park in Ryde tonight (Thursday).
2 appliances were mobilised to St Thomas’ Street in the town at around 21:35 following reports of ‘explosions’ being heard.
Just 1 retained crew from Ryde were required to dowse the flames and damp down the immediate area, including overhanging foliage which had caught light.
A second appliance from Newport was stood down.
It is unclear what caused the fire, which sent black smoke billowing into the sky at dusk.
A cordon has been erected around the charred ground.

Why was a tent there in the first instance?
Likely illegally placed, so perhaps those who pay a fortune to our useless council in council tax, decided to remove such by drastic and illegal methods, rather than await the council to ‘do something’ which they only would IF such was anywhere near where they and their ilk live.
They are happy to let squatters settle in their fields and in towns turning the Island into a ghetto now.
Maybe if more houses were built to house those living on the streets? Just a suggestion. Oh wait, I forgot the island is a no new homes area according to the people who already have a roof over their heads.
How would homeless people pay the mortgage and bills?
Try visiting an estate agent! They have lots of homes for rent or for sale..
Some people just don’t want to work and pay their way in life.
I’d hate to have such a negative self righteous attitude like you, give me compassion and kindness any day of the week…
YOU house them in your home then. Show us your ‘compassion and kindness’ OR does it only run to ‘other people’ having to endure such ? Thought so.
Where should homeless people go instead, Janice? And also we’re a ghetto because of the inbreeding, not the homeless problem. 😀
Racist.
Homeless people are homeless for one of two reasons;
1) They choose to be homeless, (ie can’t cope with life and have given up)
2) They have mental health issues, (ie can’t cope with life and have given up)
I have been on the brink of being homeless and decided to do what I had to do to bring myself back from the brink – ie stop being a snowfalke and go and get a job instead of waiting for someone else to sort out my life for me…
As YOU must be aware, many people are made homeless. The council has a duty to house them. They FIRST go into bed and breakfast UNTIL a home is found. That is what normal decent people do.
IF you are a drunk, a druggie, a violent person, and choose not to follow that course of action, and instead impose yourself on others land, as those at Smallbrook and the ‘tent’ owner, have done, then by breaking the law, why should ‘we’ pity or help such.
Daily hundreds of migrants float into or arrive in lorries into the UK, they are not, after a while left living in boxes, so IF they can do it, so can our lazy, drugged drunken foul mouthed rubbish.
That or YOU take them in, until they are ‘back on their feet’?
Not YOUR responsibility, not enough spare capacity, unsure if they would be trouble, too costly for you???
Well the same applies to all of us who get saddled with utter low life.
Grow up and SEE IT how it really is, not the ‘one’ hand picked case you read about or see on the biased Media.
Most of us KNOW differently.
I would assume that the tent was the home for a homeless person. I doubt that any self respecting person would deliberately set fire to the aforementioned tent in order to remove it. I rather suspect that some yob/chav deliberately set fire to it for means of amusement, thinking such an act was funny. Indeed, the homeless situation definitely requires addressing but I don’t think building more houses on the Island is the answer…
Makes you wonder if it was a vigilante thinking they had the right to take the law into their own hands. Considering some of the remarks here, plenty of people think this is OK behaviour. Which it is NOT!
