A teenage shoplifter who left Tesco Express with 3 sirloin steaks hidden under his top has been fined £40.
Cameron Russell, 19, of Culver Parade in Sandown, admitted 2x theft from a shop when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court earlier today (Tuesday).
Prosecuting, Lauren McConnell, told the court that on the 1st of July, Russell entered Tesco Express in Lake and filled a basket full of chilled goods before leaving the shop without making any attempts to pay.
Then, some 24 days later on the 25th July, Russell entered the shop once again before placing 3x sirloin steaks under his top and leaving the store without making payment. The court heard how the goods, totalling around £46, weren’t recovered.
Russell was handed a conditional caution back in November 2024 for offences of a similar nature.
Defending the teenager, Michael McGoldrick, told the court that his client was of previous good character and that he was stealing to survive as opposed to selling the items on.
Magistrates handed Russell a £40 fine and ordered he pay compensation of £46. He was also instructed to pay costs of £85 and a £16 surcharge fee.

Another case of taking Tesco’s “every little helps”
slogan too far!
If the person is struggling to survive, fees of £187.00
are not going to help.
Surely it would be a better idea to get such persons
cleaning in the store and carrying out other duties.
It may be a better deterrent.
And take a pay job from someone
No could assist a paid member of staff.
yeah,.. but IF you’re stealing to ‘survive’… I’m sure there are much ‘bertter’ options than sirloin steak…
Sounds more like he was stealing just for the fun of it…
Very true, nothing wrong with beans on toast.
Where have I seen that name before?
Fined £40, wow, this will really make him think again before continuing his thieving ways. How about giving this low life plenty of unpaid work?
