UPDATED: A suspicious blue container has washed up on Shanklin seafront this morning (Thursday), prompting an emergency response.
Firefighters from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance alongside Police after the object, said to be around 3ft in size, washed up on the shore opposite ‘The Waterfront’ on Shanklin Esplanade earlier this morning.
A passer-by made the discovery and called the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service at 10:40, with firefighters from Shanklin Fire Station responding to the incident.
It is feared the container could contain potentially hazardous chemicals.
Investigations are taking place to establish what is inside the container if anything.
UPDATE: 12:11 – Firefighters have donned breathing apparatus and are progressing towards the container to investigate the object further.
UPDATE @ 12:40 – It has been discovered that the container does not have any hazardous chemicals inside, however contains water.
Emergency services have now left the scene after removing the blue container from the beach.
The cordon has been lifted.
