A man taking photographs of a 13-year-old girl in Rookley has prompted concern from the teenager’s parents, who have taken to social media to make others aware of the suspicious incident.
It’s said that the teenage girl was approached by a male as she waited for the school bus at around 08:00 yesterday morning (Wednesday).
The male proceeded to take a photo of the youngster on his phone, for reasons unknown.
The man is described as being middle-aged with shoulder-length grey hair and wearing baggy, scruffy clothing.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says that it has received a report of suspicious behaviour – a man taking photographs of a teenage girl – on Main Road, Rookley.

America has guns for a reason
Life was so much better and safer before Phones had Camera’s on them.
There is no privacy in the world anymore, what with CCTV etc too!
On the flip side, I witnessed a very inappropriate act being performed in public and was able to take a photo of the man (not the incident) and his car, which was passed to the police, who dealt with the incident very promptly
That is true, but many persons don’t use Camera’s sensibly.
Photography is not a crime. Standing in public you can take a photo of everything that you can see, including houses, cars, trees, boats, humans, dogs and cats.
But an ‘older’ man taking a picture of a 13 year old girl is absolutely NOT acceptable.
A neighbour has filmed my 8 year old and the council and police said it’s perfectly fine and there’s nothing I can do. So they can accept it.
and weasels of course
Why didn’t she take picture of him on her phone?. Maybe he was inocently taking photos of something near by,but no laws broken by taking photos in public place of anyone, child or adult, pet or homes or car. Maybe she was in uniform and he wanted to know the school because same as group of lads causing anti-social behaviour. Many possibilities, hopefully the guy will come forward and explain.
You’re right, of course, there could be any number of innocent scenarios.
It’s not against the law to take a photograph of someone in a public place, but it can certainly feel threatening depending on how and when it’s done.
These days though, everyone is filming everyone else, or so it seems if you look on YouTube or TikTok.
I’m pretty sure that most 13 year olds will have photographed or videoed people when they’re out and about. I suppose it comes down to the purpose though, and that’s something we don’t know.
Was it you?
Freddie with his wild speculation again. Doesn’t sound like there was much doubt about what actually happened.
Oh so you would not be concerned if an old man was taking pictures of your young relatives then.
Actually it against peoples privacy to photograph them without permission.
This type of behaviour by men, is a practice that leads onto heightened activity in order that they achieve self gratification.
Photographing people in the street or any public place is not a crime. We all do it when out and about taking pictures of things of interest, such as on a trip to the beach or a market. But this fellow obviously wasn’t doing that.
Actually it isn’t.
If you are out in public no permission is required.
Spoken like a true clueless moron.
I never said wouldn’t be concerned, but it is what is .
You will of course have noted penny, that all those denouncing your comment, have not explained why they are in favour of this behaviour.
any man that actively takes pictures of children, when he is not a parent or relative of the child being photographed, or isn’t an employed photographer or has the permission of the parent, is obviously someone up to no good
Who denounced the comment or said they were in favour of this behaviour?
I pointed out that Penny was incorrect and it is perfectly legal to photograph in public.
Get of your high horse and actually read what people write!
Nothing illegal was done here.
Downvote it all you like, no law was broken here.
