A suspected drink driver has crashed his 4×4 in Shanklin Old Village tonight (Wednesday), leading to an emergency response from Police, fire and ambulance crews.
A Mitsubishi Shogun Sport has collided with street furniture and a wall in the S bends through the Old Village.
1 fire appliance from Shanklin is on scene in the interests of safety, alongside paramedics from the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service and a number of Police officers.
It’s understood 1 arrest has been made following a successful track by the Police Dog Unit.
The road is currently blocked in both directions with Southern Vectis buses diverting via Whiteley Bank.
Island Echo readers have reported seeing the same vehicle driving in the town prior to the crash, with reports made to Police about the driver’s actions.
UPDATE @ 00:32 – The incident is now winding down with the ambulance and fire service both standing down.
Recovery of the vehicle, which has suffered heavy front end damage, has been arranged.
UPDATE – A 60-year-old man from Shanklin has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and failing to stop.
He remains in custody at this time.

Welcome to Wight! Island roads are different… Fair play to IW Fire Brigade and Hampshire Constabulary for fine work, in the irksome line duty dealing with probable idiots. Poor sods don’t need that grief on top of everything else they have to do, but not do because nice people in gated communities say the keepers of safety, law, and order etc. should be more tolerant in their approach to ‘situations’. My Aunt Fanny….
Island roads are no different, Island driving, however, is abysmal. Add alcohol to the mixture and you have a feck nugget who not just risks their own life but all around them. Let the birds peck their eyes from their empty heads.
Absolute selfish low life scum, why endanger others if he wants to be a dickhead he should do it somewhere on his own
More actions needs to be done.. Many humans never learn.. Stay ignorant and stupid.. Its stupid that automobile industry makes cars that allow people to go faster than speed limits.. Everyday you see proof of how people abuse it and sadly many car crashes involve drivers who drive irresponsibly and innocent people suffer….
I agree with you, sadly I notice you’ve been voted down on this forum, I wonder why?.
The mentality of some people on this forum is quite worrying, they are the very people that course terrible accidents on the island and they think its ok…
We meet them every day on the island roads, and we are powerless to do anything about it, only this morning around 5.10am I was driving towards Arreton from Shanklin when a black Vahuxall tried to park in the boot of my car. He shot up to me at a frightening speed i thought he must be drunk or drugged up.
It’s a maximum of fifty and I was doing 45, so it’s not that I was driving slowly, but this idiot clearly thought I was.
Just let them past and no harm is done, you were clearly going to slow for their liking
Here we go again, Drunk at the wheel! haven’t the emergency services enough to do?
Will these idiots ever learn?
Drunks, Drugs, Stolen vehicles driven by morons. On and on and on.
The people of The Island are sick of this awful behaviour and are suffering because of it.
For gods sake will you pathetic people show some responsibility, respect and PACK IT IN NOW………
Question ? If a driver is drunk or drugged up is their insurance still valid will the insurance company still pay for repairs or a new car and can a drunk or drugged person be charged with driving without insurance surly DD is not covered in any policy ?
Insurance can be void even if your tyre pressure is wrong, any insurance policy can be void for anything outside the rules.
Most people don’t realise this, so be aware. Imagine being sued for coursing an accident, you called loose your home to pay for compensation to the victim.
Don’t assume your insured if your vehicle has something wrong with it, however, it’s down to the insurance company to investigate and make a decision.
A lot of people don’t realise that insurance is also void if a number plate is altered – friend got fined for spacing out number plate to highlight his initials. There are a lot of cars that have spaced out number plates to highlight IOW…
Or, if the number plate is replaced with a promotional style plate (the yellow has hexagon’s printed over it); the latter favoured as speed camera’s cannot read the number plate. Those type of number plates are often seen on high-performance cars with dick-heads as drivers.
Insurance companies are not charitable institutions, they read the small print!
Those irresponsible idiots dont usually have insurance.
Well that’s another one we have been expecting for a while … if you are driving through the old village it’s 20mph from the mead through to the car park PLEASE OBSERVE IT FOR YOUR SAKE AND FOR THE RESIDENTS AND BUSINESSES … there are lines on the road that tell you which side of the road you should be on AS WELL !!! . My property sits inches from the kerb . Last night this idiot nearly took out our home and livelihood , our property shook . My neighbours property suffered damage ( once again !!!) I cross high street / church road many times a day and I would say 90% of drivers are breaking the speed limit and many are on the wrong side of the road and this includes cars , trucks, motorbikes and cyclists!!! You have to take your life in your hands daily . The situation has deteriorated over the last couple of years and I can see only more of these. Last night this driver damaged an historic building took out a steel bollard sending it flying across the road with other debris showering people stood outside a property on the other side of the road and narrowly missed hitting them before making off. Services involved last night at least 3 police cars including a dog unit , fire engine ambulance , recovery service and island roads
These roads are not built for speed horse and cart only. This pretty little village is getting back to normal then it takes one idiot like this. He must of been drunk drugged or drug run he even rum from the scene gutless he needs putting away but the wont. Tougher laws need to be taken with these people
The costs of which must surely amount to several thousand pounds. Make him pay for it, not me!
When is something going to be done about the speed of vehicles going down Church Rd and through the Old Village it’s a disgrace.A petition has already been raised and sent to the local Counciler.Law enforcement is at zero in this area. Maybe now something can be done.
Totally agree with your comments, let’s all get onto Quirk the Counciller he is probably hiding under a bush at the moment,he has had a petition signed by 50 odd people complaining about speed.
Let’s see some action!!!!
Time for a camera?
Ambulance and fire officers correctly wearing hi-viz but obviously the police are working to different standards again.
@billyboy don’t you think that the Police have enough to be dealing with, than idiots who deliberately drink and drive. Just lucky no one was killed.
I suppose you’d want flashing lights and a siren near speedtraps because of “visibility”
Damn tool you are…
The road was shut
My country jail is for drunk crashed people. Your jail no room as many oversea bad men is fill up them. People here no so. They do as please them no punishment is to come
This continuous stream of totally irresponsible drivers is just not acceptable. On top of everything else fleeing the scene is typical of these people with no conscience and no sense of right or wrong.
They are so devoid of any flicker of intelligence that even if they do have vehicle insurance they are probably driving cars with some modification that voids their cover. Like miss spaced or other illegal number plates, illegal tinted windows or loud through exhausts .
This driver if convicted should go to jail and any assets sold to pay for the mayhem caused in terms of damage and emergency service costs
I hope the UK government will bring in a zero alcohol limit for drivers and soon . This will remove any confusion and make roads safer.
However more enforcement off the laws we already have would be a good start. I do not understand why we do not use covert speed cameras and more ANPR as routine.
I really do not accept that it is too expensive to do this , accidents are incredibly costly to the taxpayer and more enforcement would reduce accident numbers.
People currently flout the law because the chances of getting caught are low.
Drunk or drugged drivers need jail terms. There car taken and sold, a fine, and banning for three years. NOTHING else will prevent them doing such.
They are the same as firing a gun into a street hoping that no one is in the line of fire. Jail them.
Yet more drunk drivers. What the hell is going on? Why do people do it, why do they think they can get away with it? Judges need to put down much tougher sentencing. These morons could kill innocent people.
When done for drunk driving treat them as if they have no insurance and take their car away.
Speeding in the Old Village/Church Road area is appalling and I regularly witness speeds in excess of 50 mph in the 20 limit. Apparently this is only my ‘perception’ according to the police. In actual fact my ‘perception’ is that the police do nothing to enforce the speed limit.
I am thinking of videoing for a half an hour and send that to the police … see what their perception is
Another Ignorent driver on the island with the attitude I don’t give a s___ about anyone else police need to stop more cars for bad driving and speeding too
Island driving is bad because taking your test hear is the same as doing it in the 1960s.you have to pass in a city to have the right experience.
Rubbish. Driving is nothing like the 60’s here. Then far far fewer cars, less drunk drivers as most could not afford a car, and certainly not many social housing people.
It is the arrogant, vile attitude of selfish, pushey little jerks who drive like they own the road, and as they do in life, try to ‘bully’ others out of their way.
So it is not the traffic, but the low life behind the wheel that has changed, but do accept that inner cities have more low life, at the moment than here, but WAIT until Pennyfeathers is filled, then watch this space.
Are didn’t take long for that old pennyfeathers chestnut to come out.for God sake change the record.
Only a Shogun sport, not one of Mitsubishi’s best cars (Evo, FTO, Eclipse Cross etc) so nothing of value was lost tbh
Speed bumps at the start of every 20 mph zone would solve the problem.
As would installing black boxes on all cars, or electronically limiting the power to the equivalent of a 1.4l on all vehicles
Not very up to date are you, a lot of 1.4l engines put out the best part of 200bhp these days.
Yes island roads have plenty tarmac for speed bumps , just not to fill the pot holes
Speed bumps to slow the emergency services, good idea. Imagine riding in the back of an Ambulance with a spinal injury.
I am a Church Road resident .I am appalled by the speeding along Church Road which leads into the Old Village ,I have not seen any Police speed checks along Church Road this year ,I have witnessed cars buses and lorries speeding past in excess of 60 miles per hour .There are children living along Church Road and elderly which are frightened to go out due to speeding vehicles.
Doubt lorries and buses are doing 60mph by law buses are limited to 52mph/80kph with most bus companies limiting them further to 45mph and with the speed those buses move doubt it would get to 30mph before the turn. Same with lorries and coaches limited to 56mph. A lot lot of boy racers in thier silly chavved up civics and fiesta’s, focus’s etc with exhausts the size of the Dartford tunnel. They race through the chicaine at Shanklin old village pretending thier vin diesel from fast and furious. Simple solution good old sleeping policemen/speed humps just at the height where if they go over speed hump it will smash the body kit off if they go over them to fast
Actually I have seen large vans go through over speed even boots/ coop etc etc trucks over speed limit not to mention cyclists ( the speed they go through they could kill and you can’t hear them coming ) . A lot of people are talking of speed humps but you do need to consider that some people have conditions that make driving over them very painful I know someone with back problems and it really is a problem .
With all the technology today why can’t we make car’s that will go no faster than the speed limit.
Because of this. Please try to do some research first.
