Police have confirmed that no arrests have been made following an arson attack at a block of flats in Newport last week.
As first reported by Island Echo, pumping appliances from Newport and Cowes were called to the scene on Hookes Way shortly after 04:00 on Friday morning (6h October)
Firefighters donned breathing apparatus and entered the building after a blaze broke out in the 1st-floor landing and stairwell area.
1 resident told Island Echo that they were awoken by shouts of ‘there’s a fire’. Nobody was hurt during the incident.
The fire was deemed suspicious and an arson investigation was launched.
Forensic investigators from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary and investigators from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service arrived at the scene mid-morning wearing their white suits as they worked to piece together the events of that morning.
A cordon was erected around one of the entrances to the block for some time. This has since been lifted.
Today (Monday), Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary have confirmed to Island Echo that no arrests have yet been made and investigations remain ongoing.

Much to busy searching the flats for the odd cannabis plant.
If that flat was yours, perhaps they would find cannabis, amongst other drugs…
Point being, EVEN if they do find the perpetrator, as our prisons are filled to capacity with our own, and now the worlds flotsam rejects, then only a ‘caution’ would likely be the outcome, so sadly, even if not caught it will make little difference to the growing amount of vile filling our Island and once beautiful country.
You may not wish to hear or believe it, but it is true.
It is true, unfortunately. Years ago, Arson was rightly treated as a serious crime and sentences given reflected this, which resulted in years at her Majesty’s service. Pathetic sentences now. Bang them all up, who cares if they have to share a cell with 1 or 2 other law breakers.
