Eligible Islanders are being encouraged to book their seasonal flu and COVID-19 vaccinations ahead of St Mary’s Vaccination Centre reopening next month.
The vaccination centre at St Mary’s Hospital will open from Thursday 1st October, offering vaccinations to eligible adults as well as separate clinics for some babies, children and young people.
Flu vaccinations will be available to adults aged over 65, as well as their carers or close contacts, while COVID-19 vaccinations will be offered to adults aged over 75.
Those aged over 18 with severe immunosuppression will be eligible to receive both vaccinations.
Separate clinics will also be available for babies and children aged from 6 months to 18 years with severe immunosuppression.
Many eligible people will receive an invitation to get vaccinated, but Islanders do not need to wait to be contacted and can book now through the National Booking Service by calling 119 or through the NHS App.
A walk-in service will also operate at St Mary’s, although those with booked appointments will be prioritised. People are therefore being encouraged to book in advance to minimise waiting times.
From 1st October to 15th October, the Vaccination Centre will open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays between 08:00 and 14:00.
From 19th October to 17th December, it will open on Mondays and Wednesdays between 08:00 and 14:00.
Sue Lightfoot, Hospital Vaccination Centre Clinical Lead, has said:
“Flu and COVID-19 can be particularly serious for older people and those living with certain health conditions. Protection from previous vaccinations can also reduce over time, which is why seasonal vaccination is so important.
“Winter can put additional pressure on our health services, and vaccination is one of the best ways eligible people can protect themselves against serious illness from flu and COVID-19.
“We would encourage everyone who is eligible to get their vaccination as soon as they can. There is no need to wait for an invitation – you can book now, or take advantage of our walk-in service.
“By getting vaccinated, you are not only helping to protect yourself, but also helping to protect those around you and reduce pressure on our NHS services over the winter.”
