Smallbrook Stadium in Ryde will be the base for many of Great Britain’s top young racers who will come together for a pre-season training camp being organised by the Wightlink Warriors’ former team manager and now GB Youth supremo, Neil Vatcher.
The gathering between 18th-20th February replicates previous successful camps held on the Island and combines expert on-track coaching with tuition about off track essentials such as diet, fitness, mechanical understanding and media profile.
Whilst the list of attendees is very close to being finalised, speedway followers can expect over 20 ‘keen as mustard’ riders from all the youth age groups to be put through their paces. Names to look out for include Drew Kemp (Eastbourne – British Under 19 Champion); Jason Edwards (Eastbourne/Mildenhall – Vince Mapley title holder); Jordan Palin (Scunthorpe/Belle Vue Colts – British 500cc Youth Champion) and Sam Hagon (Kent – British 250cc Youth Champion).
Several other up-and-comers and riders of National League standard are sure to take up the invitation to attend and participate in the track, gym and classroom sessions and local fans will be delighted to know that Blandford-based Warrior Chad Wirtzfeld will be involved along with his younger brother, Blaze.
Providing the weather is appropriate, the camp timetable will see riders on track on the Tuesday and Thursday from 11:00 to 16:00 with the Wednesday devoted to the many off-track activities included in the programme.
There will also be a speedway quiz held in the Premier Lounge at the stadium on the Wednesday evening with a 19:30 start and that will incorporate the rider draw for the Under 21 Championship qualifying rounds and details of the venues for the 2020 GB Youth Championships. The on-track events and quiz are free to attend with an open invitation to anyone who would like to pop along.
