SNOW, WIND AND RAIN CAUSES TRAVEL DISRUPTION

UPDATED: A mix of strong winds, heavy rain and sleety snow is leading to travel disruption across the Isle of Wight this morning (Wednesday). 

Red Jet services between West Cowes and Southampton have been suspended due to the adverse conditions, as have Hovertravel services between Ryde and Southsea.

Snow is causing tricky driving conditions on higher ground on the South side of the Island in areas such as Blackgang, Niton, Whitwell, Ventnor and Luccombe.

Meanwhile a number of branches and trees are falling across roads including Combley Road in Havenstreet.

The Isle of Wight MET Service are forecasting that the weather will clear as the morning continues with sunshine by mid to late afternoon.

UPDATE @ 09:17 – A tree has fallen across Newport Road, Niton resulting in the carriageway becoming blocked in both directions. Island Roads are working to clear the obstruction.

On the ferries, Wightlink’s Fishbourne-Portsmouth car ferry service is running 30 minutes behind timetable due to an earlier technical problem.

UPDATE @ 10:49 – Red Jet has now resumed a timetabled service.

UPDATE @ 14:53 – Hovertravel have resumed a normal service this afternoon.

There are no other issues to report, with the worse of the weather having passed.
