Smallbrook Lane has now re-opened in both directions as the major roundabout improvement scheme nears completion.
Despite some challenging conditions and the ongoing effects of COVID, particularly at the end of last year, the work to divert services and create the new carriageway area on the east side of the road and at Smallbrook Lane is almost complete.
The focus is now shifting to the west side of Ashey Road to realign the kerbs and install drainage and new lighting before the whole area is surfaced.
Smallbrook Lane was due to re-open on Monday but a small delay resulted in the road finally re-opening fully on Wednesday morning. It means motorists can now travel to and from Westridge, although 3-way temporary traffic lights remain in force.
Carters Road is now closed completely for the next 5 weeks, after which all roads will re-open as normal without traffic lights. A new 30mph speed limit will be fully in force though.
The current forecast is that the works will be completed around 18th April with the surfacing and line marking undertaken overnight thereafter. It means the project is only a couple of weeks behind schedule, with it initially said that the scheme would be complete by early April.
Why are they still saying it was just the roundabout improvement. We all know it had something to do with utilities being layed also. Probably laying very large blue water pipes to hitch up to P Feathers massive development of 904 homes!
Let’s hope they thought ahead and did all of that prep work, so there’s not more delays when they start construction
Disgusting the way the council pretend it is for our safety, when really they know the amount of traffic flooding in and out of Penny Feathers will be immense, hence the real reason for this costly illuminated work.
Once a lovely dark country lane, filled with owls, bats, and birds of prey, soon to be filled with chavs, red brick boxes and fast food containers.

Are you from another dimension? Has always been full of fast food junk and a race track for the boy racers. You have a very rosy idea of the island. Probably one of these old goats that moved here to die. People who grow up on the island know what it is really like. It has always been and will always be one big former council estate with a beach. If it was not for the beach would be no different to tower hamlets.
Do you have to be so rude in your comment. The island was a much nicer place even 10 years ago. Seems to be full of chavs, druggies and out of control kids now. It’s not the island that has changed, it’s the standards of people who live here.

it isn’t roundabouts that are dangerous – it’s the people who use them.
there are too many who, once in their cars, think that they own the road, and pay no heed to the mantra we were taught – ‘always give due care and attention’
Once the surface has been laid and the road markings finished the utilities will turn up and lay some more pipes and cables

Looks awful at present, let’s hope for landscaping (?). Must’ve cost a fortune in taxpayers’ money. Traffic lights would have been much more efficient.
I thought we were supposed to be going green. Why do we need lighting at this junction, don’t vehicles have headlights?
Yeh it may well be Pennyfeathers that has triggered it, but the roundoubout was bad before and I hope it’s an improvement. Just driving to work daily I saw 5 accidents there in a fortnight (prior to COVID). Yes, it is the drivers to an extent, but hopefully the changes will protect them from themselves, and others from them.
