The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service were alerted to reports of a fire in the open in East Cowes earlier this evening (Tuesday).
1 appliance from East Cowes was mobilised to Norris Castle Estate Woods shortly before 21:00.
Due to the retained firefighters’ quick response to the area, it meant they were able to contain the fire and extinguish it before it could cause any further damage.
They used buckets of water to dampen down the area and used tools to turn the ground over to rid any hot spots.

Too many of these ‘fires in the open/wooded areas’ lately. Methinks somebody is arson about. For heavens sake, think of the wildlife and their habitats being destroyed, just so you can watch the fire engines turn out. Grow up and get a life
Quite. Irresponsible youths are often seen in such areas, where they hang about drinking and smoking pot. The litter they leave behind spoils the place for everyone else..
. . .
It’s seen as too common and low level by the Police, so we need some local community officers to deal with such issues. Youngsters openly smoking drugs on the street needs to be dealt with too, as does drunkenness.
. . .
We used to have National Service in this country, but perhaps some form of compulsory community service or special projects would help to channel youthful energy into something positive and productive. Something needs to be done about this issue.
The ONLY way this will ever cease is to stop child allowance and child tax credits.
For paying low life more to breed is a costly mistake on society.
Hence we now have half the dirt poor of the planet arrive here.
It will only get worse, as we become more overcrowded and ever poorer.
Even the rich, nice areas will ‘feel’ the problem as we cram ever more people here. Look at Pennyfeathers over a thousand homes.
Your spot on .If you cannot afford to support your children. Don’t have them .Don’t see why my tax dollars should pay for someone else’s sprogs.
In response to National Service and ‘youths smoking pot’ comments, may I wade in? Regarding N.S.; nearly all volunteer servicemen and women have pride to be among the finest fighting forces, if not the finest in terms of conduct and richness of history, so to suggest hard earned posts should be shared by the nation’s losers is an insult, and would not be tolerated by rank or rate. Also the morons we see hanging about outside Boots etc., waiting for their scrip’ (sic.) couldn’t handle any kind banter, discipline, hardship, work or sense of pride in a job well done without seventy-two social workers and M.P.s on a bandwagon wanting to abolish the Armed Forces. With regard to youths possibly hanging about Norris Castle..? I don’t say that they ain’t, but wasn’t a planning application put on hold recently for this listed, historical building? Strange if a fire ‘started by youths’ made the building not worth saving in its present form, thus ripe for development?
