Motorists heading into Newport are facing significant delays in all directions this morning (Monday) – all because of the closure of the Lidl slip road.
Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks has had to close the slip road from the dual carriageway down towards Lidl for emergency electricity works. As a result, motorists are having to divert locally.
The northbound carriageway of Medina Way is backing up onto Coppins Bridge, with the problems emanating from there. The fragility of Newport is such that traffic is now stacking up to Racecourse Roundabout on Fairlee Road, and all the way back to Wootton Common Roundabout for those using Staplers Road. It’s said that Blacklands Lane and Long Lane are also at a standstill.
There are delays heading into Newport from Blackwater too, but these appear to be less severe with queues back to Shide.
Southern Vectis is advising of 20-minute delays across its network of buses.
Havenstreet Main Road is listed for closure today, which may add to the problems being experienced for those travelling or and from Ryde.

What is worse is that there is no signage until you get onto the Dual and there are no road workers carrying out maintenence!
Typical island roads , in keeping with the Isle of traffic lights mentality
And when you did get there there were no workmen in site. Surely it could of been opened until work started there!!
It was closeed all weekend for no reason total mess up .And just get it done it’s not rocket science unorganized chaos as usual
They will probably say it’s been too hot for them to work today! Any excuse!
Is this an Island ‘thing’ where they close roads all over the Island at the same time but then don’t allocate any workmen or they’ll allocate two but with one doing nothing but scrolling on his phone?
Odg, but Havenstreet was open at 10.30 this morning
And the council are going on about revising the parking situation in Newport. No doubt yet more permit holders coming up and yet more road closures.
Why oh why doesn’t anyone at the council get to grips with the REAL problem? There is NO way for any traffic to by pass it. All that stupid nonsense with the magic roundabout and whatever they did on St George’s Way ( does anyone know what was actually achieved there?)
A proper bridge across the Medina between Cowes and East Cowes and a proper link from Staplers to Asda roundabout. There, that would sort it out….
Or is it just me? I reckon it would have been cheaper especially if they had scrapped the 9th wonder of the IOW.
The issue here, sir, is that you’re making too much sense.
Careful! The council will want to pay you an enormous consultancy fee for that bit of common sense!
Looking at the work being carried out by the sliproad, it was off the road by the side of the funeral directors. There was no reason to close the road except for the works van blocking it; it could have easily parked on the forecourt.
The trouble is when it comes to road works, utility companies seem to have a free license to do, or not to do what they want and aren’t answerable to anybody. The council don’t seem to give care!
Is rhe slip now open?
