Creekside Women’s Institute were given a presentation by Ruth from Sight for Wight at this month’s Members Meeting.
Sight for Wight started as IOW Society for the Blind 160 years ago. Ruth gave a short history of her own journey into sight loss, which flagged up some ingrained attitudes to women’s health.
´Be Wise Protect Your Eyes!’ She explained the importance of protecting your eyes by wearing sunglasses from an early age, not sharing make up’ using eye products that are in date etc.
Through her journey Ruth made very supportive and long lasting friendships.
Through the support that Sight for Wight gives the 700 people that are on their books, however small it may be, friendship and support continue. They offer a whole range of activities and services. Home visits to see how help can be effective and support for family and friends. With adaptations people enjoy swimming, golf, bowling sailing, rock climbing, yoga, tandem riding, audio library and, during coffee mornings, peer to peer support is generated.
Tips on how to use Alexa to help with outside contact, distinguishing the shampoo or toothpaste, talking clock are shared. There is a slow walking group and a 6 to 7 mile stride with guide dogs.
