UPDATED WITH VIDEO: Firefighters from the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are attending a fire that has broken out at a shop in Rookley this afternoon (Sunday).

A total of 5 fire appliances from Newport, Cowes, Shanklin and Ventnor are in attendance at the Co-Operative store on Main Road.

Emergency services were called to the scene at just after 15:15 when staff raised the alarm.

The Incident Command Unit from Newport is also in attendance.

Locals are reporting that there was ‘a lot of smoke’ prior to the fire service’s arrival.

UPDATE @ 16:24 – 4 BA and 2 hose reels are in operation to bring the fire under control.

It is thought an electrical fault may be to blame.

No one is thought to have been injured and the ambulance service have now left the scene.

The main road through a Rookley remains open in both directions.

UPDATE @ 16:59 – The fire has been brought under control and crews are now withdrawing.

1 appliance from Cowes has been stood down from the incident and has returned to station.

Investigations are now underway to confirm the cause of the fire.

UPDATE @ 17:55 – It has been confirmed that the fire broke out on the ground floor – shop level – but smoke has caused damage to the flats above.

The Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service are now making up and are standing down from the incident.

UPDATE MONDAY – The Co-Operative has opened for business as normal today.
