Shanklin Sandown Rowing Club’s junior athletes travelled to Bryanston School in Dorset for the Wessex team trials for the Junior Inter-Regional Regatta last weekend.
The club will have 3 crews going forward to represent the Wessex region following efforts at the weekend – Connie Batley-Smith will row up an age group after she won the Girls J15 Single Scull event, this after taking the title in last week’s virtual National Indoor Championships.
The recently formed J15 Double of Rose Collier and Annabelle Steward secured their spot on the team with an impressive win, whilst in the J14 Boy’s Double event, Josh Batchelor and Digby Ridgewell made it 3 wins from 3, securing their win by the biggest margin of the day.
The club also had 5 crews competing at the BTC Spring Head on the River Itchen in Southampton, taking 2 wins and 2 runner-up spots.
The Novice Men’s crew of Huseyin Yolcu, Tobin Green, Isaac King, Fin Diffey and Jane Denby-Roach enjoyed their best row to date to take the win with the club’s second win coming from the Master’s Ladies crew of Sam Travis, Stella Gamble, Hayley Owen, Jane Denby-Roach, and Esme Walters.
There were 2nd place finishes for the Women’s Junior Pair and the Men’s Open Double Scull, with the Girl’s J18 Quad also posting a good time in worsening conditions.
