The Isle of Wight’s David Moorse is preparing for an epic 4-day mountain expedition in Scotland in memory of family members lost to dementia – and to raise vital funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK.
64-year-old David, from Shanklin, will travel from the Island on 13th June to take on more than 60 peaks in the Cuillin range on the Isle of Skye.
Known for its challenging and dramatic terrain, the Cuillin ridge features exposed ridgelines, sheer drops and technical climbs, including the famed ‘Inaccessible Pinnacle’ or ‘Inn Pinn’.
David is aiming to summit at least 60 peaks over 4 days and nights, with hopes to extend the challenge to 64 – one for every year of his life. The immense challenge we will be taking on involves 59 tops, 34 miles and 23,000 feet of ascent.
He has been preparing for the journey by repeatedly hiking from sea level to the Isle of Wight’s highest points while carrying a full pack. Once on Skye, he will bivvy out overnight under the stars, navigating sections that require rock climbing and abseiling.
David has said the motivation for the challenge comes from a deeply personal place. His father, aunt, and grandfather all suffered from forms of dementia, and he hopes this effort will contribute to a future free of the disease.
David has said:
“When a cancer, robbing your family of your loved one, is a relative ‘blessing’ because it prevents the Alzheimer’s inflicting its worst… you know Alzheimer’s needs a treatment, and a cure.
“Every 3 minutes dementia steals a ‘happily ever after’. Research is our only chance of changing the ending for people affected by dementia.”
He will return to the Isle of Wight on Saturday 22nd June. Misty Isle Boat Trips has generously waived David’s return fare from Skye as a donation toward the cause.
All donations raised will go directly to Alzheimer’s Research UK, the UK’s leading dementia research charity. David will also be documenting his journey through photos and video, which will be shared after the event.
