31-year-old Robert Church of Steep Hill Road, Shanklin has been charged with assaulting 3 Police officers whilst they were executing their duty at an address in Ryde yesterday (Saturday).
As exclusively reported by Island Echo earlier today, 1 officer suffered a suspected broken nose in the incident, whilst another was bitten on the hand. A third officer suffered impact injuries. The trio were responding to a reported disturbance at School Street, Oakfield.
Hampshire Constabulary has now confirmed that Robert Church has been charged with 4 offences – criminal damage and 3 counts of assault by beating against the officers.
Police say that 2 of the injured officers attended St Mary’s Hospital for treatment.
Church has been remanded in custody and will appear before the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court tomorrow morning (Monday).
A spokesperson for the Police has said:
“This sort of incident highlights the danger our officers face every day. We all accept that being assaulted and/or injured is a potential hazard in our roles, but this never makes it acceptable. No one, no matter what their role or job, goes to work to be assaulted like this”.
