A sewage leak near the River Yar in Alverstone has been stopped, but repair work is still ongoing today (Wednesday).
Southern Water has confirmed that the spill was stopped yesterday and that they are continuing to work closely with the Environment Agency to minimise the impact to the environment.
Repairs to a burst wastewater main are progressing but have not been completed. In the meantime, tankers are being used to maintain flow and ensure people can continue to use their bathroom and kitchens as normal. Tankers also help reduce the risk of further damage to the environment.
Due to the use of tankers, Alverstone Shute has been closed in both directions to motorists. This road will remain closed to protect the safety of workers until the repair is completed.
Southern Water would like to thank customers for their patience while they complete this work as quickly as possible.
