The IW Met Service has issued a local weather warning for severe gales from late on Boxing Day.
A yellow warning is in force from 18:00 on Saturday (Boxing Day) until 06:00 on Sunday morning.
Forecasters say a large area of low pressure will sink across the UK through Saturday night and into Sunday morning and as it does so will develop some very strong winds along its southern edge.
Southwesterly gusts of up to 80mph are possible along the Island’s south coast, west coast and also over the highest hills. Gusts of 60-70mph are likely further away from windward coasts.
A spell of potentially very heavy rain will also accompany the strongest winds and this may bring with it additional hazards.
There is the risk of structural damage in some parts along with falling tree debris and there is likely to be travel and transport disruptions, including to cross-Solent travel.
This warning will likely be updated again on Christmas Day/Boxing Day.
