UPDATED: The frustration of no mobile phone signal continues for O2 customers in Ryde following the failure of a mast in the town.
The telecommunications company has said that the recent bad weather damaged the mast on top of the Commodore Cinema in Star Street, which has since been removed for repair resulting in no mobile phone signal for those in the Ryde area. This includes Tesco customers who use the same network.
Island Echo understands those affected have been offered £3 a day compensation for the downtime, which for some customers simply isn’t good enough with many feeling they have been lied to regarding the expected date of repair.
A spokesperson for the company has said:
“Our engineers have now been able to recover our equipment and we are conducting surveys and liaising with local authorities as well as third party suppliers to identify a location for a temporary solution.
“We are working as quickly as we can to restore service to the Ryde area and apologise for the inconvenience.”
The mast was removed by crane last week, however it is currently unclear if the mast will return to the same location.
UPDATE FRIDAY – Island Echo witnessed a crane at the George Street site this morning, matching reports that a temporary mast has been installed to resume a partial service.
Readers in the Ryde area are reporting that service has returned to some but not all 02 and Tesco mobile phones in the area.
Some Island Echo readers have reported that compensation has been offered for the two weeks of downtime, however others are reporting that they have not been offered any compensation.
