A serious road traffic collision involving a motorcycle and a pedestrian has resulted in the closure of the main road between Newport and Cowes this morning (Thursday).
The incident has occurred on the A3020 Horsebridge Hill near the junction with Noke Common.
A white motorcycle can be seen damaged in the middle of the carriageway having come into contact with an individual crossing the road.
Emergency services were called to the scene – at the pedestrian crossing – at around 06:00.
Police have closed the road in both directions between Forest Road and Noke Common with all traffic being diverted via Whitehouse Road and Pallance Road until further notice.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary says that the road is to remain closed for several hours as specialist mainland-based collision investigators are called in to conduct a forensic examination of the scene.
Door-to-door enquiries are underway to collate any doorbell footage.
Hard road closures are now in place at Forest Road (with access maintained to the hospital), at Noke Common and at Stag Lane.
There are significant delays for motorists diverting via Whitehouse Road with traffic backed up to Thorness Bay. Queues are also forming for the floating bridge between Cowes and East Cowes.
UPDATE @ 10:08 – Specialist officers from the mainland-based Collision Investigation Unit have arrived at Horsebridge Hill to conduct a forensic examination of the crash scene.
UPDATE @ 10:40 – Police have confirmed that a man in his 50s has tragically died as a result of being hit by a motorcycle.
