Less than 2 weeks after a woman was charged with murder, 31-year-old Adie Lawton has also now been charged with the murder of 17-month-old Jayla-Jean McLaren.
It was early on 1st August last year that young Jayla-Jean was rushed from her home on Dairy Crest Drive, Newport to St Mary’s Hospital with serious injuries, later being transferred to Southampton General Hospital by air for specialist treatment.
Sadly, despite the best efforts of all involved, the youngster died in hospital on the Sunday afternoon due to serious head injuries, sparking an outpour of emotion from the local community.
Last month, 27-year-old Samara Glover was charged with her murder and causing or allowing the death of a child. She has since been remanded in custody ahead of a Crown Court appearance.
Now, Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that charges have been laid against her partner, Adrian David Lawton, also of Dairy Crest Drive in Newport.
He was previously arrested on suspicion of murder, causing or allowing the death of a child, and causing assault/ill treatment/neglect/abandonment of child/young person to cause unnecessary suffering/injury and was bailed.
Ahead of that bail date, a charging decision has been made by the Crown Prosecution Service today (Tuesday).
The 31-year-old has been charged with murder and causing or allowing the death of a child.
He is due to appear at Southampton Magistrates Court tomorrow (Wednesday).
