A celebration of Newport’s rich past will take over the town on Saturday 6th September as the second Newport Heritage Day takes place.
Organisers say the event will once again see the whole town getting involved, with shop owners uncovering the history of their premises and creating themed window displays.
Among the many highlights, 64 High Street will feature an exhibition on the history of Isle of Wight steam railways, while Independent Arts will host a Classic Games exhibition with an opportunity to play chess.
The Museum of Island History will be open free of charge, and the Newport Quay will be packed with hundreds of classic vehicles as part of the annual Classic Motor Show.
Newport Minster will welcome visitors with guided tours, family-friendly talks and activities. An exhibition on the themes of birth, marriage and death – in partnership with Brave Island – will also be on display inside the Minster. Meanwhile, Time Jump Histories will offer a step back in time to the trenches, and Quarr Abbey will exhibit their bookbinding work.
The Isle of Wight Council Archaeology team will showcase significant items from Newport’s past. Inside the Minster, support will also be available from Unity Hall, Newport and Carisbrooke Heritage Society, and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to help locals uncover personal historical connections.

The event is being organised by the Newport Cultural Consortium and is supported by Newport Minster, Newport Business Association, Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council and the Shaping Newport Partnership.
