The Island Car Centre Sandown Sprint will now take place over the weekend of 27th & 28th March 2021, it has been announced.
This motorsport event will take place at Culver Parade, Sandown and was originally scheduled for March this year but had to be postponed due to coronavirus.
Tim Addison, promoter of the Sandown Sprint commented:
“Following recent discussions with our sponsors, the IW Council and Island Roads, we’re pleased to now formally confirm the 2021 dates. The Sprint requires a huge team effort, so once again we’re very grateful for this backing.
“With only eight months to go, there’s not long to wait now for this landmark event.”
The Sandown Sprint will mark a return to motor racing on Isle of Wight roads after more than 50 years. 100 racing cars will compete on a purpose-built track that runs along the seafront in Sandown.
More than 2,000 people purchased tickets for the postponed event in 2020 and all will be valid for next year.
Councillor Ian Ward said:
“This is sure to be a huge shot in the arm for the local economy at a time when it is sorely needed. We look forward to hosting this exhilarating weekend and see it as a great opportunity for new visitors to Sandown to discover what a fantastic place it is to visit. This is all part of the town’s regeneration.”
Island-based company John Peck Construction has led the way in constructing a suitable track. The course will be 750m in length and feature 2 chicanes, together with challenging fast corners and
hairpin bends. The basic concept was approved by Motorsport UK in 2019 when it first issued an Event Permit to organisers Solent and the Isle of Wight Car Club.
Tim adds:
“In our first year the objective is to create a safe and entertaining event which can be enjoyed by both competitors and spectators.
“If we can get this right, then it should provide a platform that we can build on. Looking forward, the potential is very exciting.”
There are no plans at this stage to sell further spectator tickets for the event and entry may be limited to those who have already purchased tickets for the 2020 Sprint.
