PICTURE EXCLUSIVE: Sandown’s biggest eyesore, Savoy Court, is now hardly recognisable as demolition of the former hotel continues to progress as Christmas approaches.
Ryde Demolition have been working to clear the site between Victoria Road and Avenue Road since July, with the iconic corner building now almost completely gone. In the 4 weeks since Island Echo last visited the site, the Ryde-based company have carefully deconstructed the once postcard-picture corner building, which has already made a big visual improvement in the town.
The scaffolding services provider has now erected scaffolding around the last section of the complex and has begun gutting the interior. It is hoped the site will be completely flattened by the end of February, as previously reported by Island Echo.
Planning permission has been granted by the Isle of Wight Council for a brand new apartment block, with a total of 19 self-contained flats and associated parking with attractive landscaping. It is unknown when construction is likely to begin.
