SANDOWN BEACH TO PROUDLY FLY SEASIDE AWARD THIS SUMMER

Sandownseasideaward2024Keep Britain Tidy has announced the winners of the prestigious Seaside Awards for Summer 2024 and among them is Sandown’s beach near Eastern Gardens, which meets the high standards required.

The town will be proudly flying the flag over the coming months as tourists – and locals – descend on The Bay to enjoy the golden sands and breathtaking views.

But the news comes in the same week that national newspaper The Mirror published a piece about Sandown being a ‘sad-looking dump’. The article reports that visitors have slammed Sandown as a location that has been in decline for decades, full of derelict shops with a rundown aesthetic.

Despite the negative comments, the beach still ticks a lot of boxes including for safety and services such as first aid and lifeguards, water quality (to a ‘sufficient standard’) and environmental management.

Town Mayor Alex Lightfoot has said:

“Sandown continues to invest in lifeguards, beach bins, buoys, showers at Eastern Gardens and, this year, working with longshoremen, a plan for the raking of beaches.

“Achieving this standard has enabled the town to secure extra funding to provide a Changing Places amenity, as well as information panels, and we have increased support for events such as the Carnival and Regatta”.

Clean beach but filthy sea. The local council didn’t even apply for a Blue Flag award this year because of low water quality standards due to frequent sewage discharges. The council should sue Southern Water for damaging the tourist trade, which is obviously the main source of income for the town. Discharging sewage in bathing areas is truly appalling.

“water quality (to a sufficient standard)”, surely an essential criteria for an award should be excellent water quality seeing as the sea is a vital component of any visit to the beach. But at least by raking the beach they may clear up any of those Brown Mullets that get washed up…

Sandown is a sh*thole yet some eateries are charging
£3.00 for a cup of tea, and the eateries outlook is overlooking
a derelict Hotel.

You don’t pay £3.00 for a cup of tea in London.
