Sainsbury’s in Newport will lose its in-store café within just a matter of days, the supermarket chain has confirmed.
It was back in January that Island Echo reported on the news that Sainsbury’s looked set to close its in-store café here on the Isle of Wight amid massive nationwide cuts.
Labour’s changes to National Minimum Wage and National Insurance contributions, which have now come into force, mean that Sainsbury’s has had to find an additional £140million. This has played a part in the decision to cull 3,000 jobs and close all 61 remaining cafés.
It has been revealed that Sainsbury’s only Isle of Wight in-store café will close for the final time on Friday 11th April – that’s this coming Friday.
It remains to be seen what will come of the first floor space at the Foxes Road store, but there is some suggestion that some stores across the country could soon house franchises such as Starbucks or Gourmet Burger Kitchen.
A spokesperson for Sainsbury’s has said:
“In January, we shared the difficult decision that our remaining Sainsbury’s cafes would be closing and this will take place on April 11.
“We are sorry for any disappointment this may cause.
“Our stores continue to support the customers and communities they serve in a range of ways, including through fundraising, volunteering and donations to good causes.
“We’re exploring future opportunities for the space and will keep our colleagues and customers updated.”
Starmer and Reeves, what a fantastically destructive combo. As they said “They won’t tax working people” what they didn’t say was “We will tax your employer though.” Entire Labour party are a bunch of liars. Look at hideaway Quigley, I didn’t think anyone would of been worse than Seely, but he is.
Coked-up/K-line Starmer and Rachel from Accounts will also make it harder for those entitled to PIP to maintain it. If an individual hasn’t got 4 points in one area, they lose entitlement. That means that individuals who use that money to pay for independent care will now have to source it directly from the NHS—the under-resourced NHS. So, Rachel from Accounts thinks that removing £72.65 a week will save money, yet it will cost the NHS more.
The current Labour Government haven’t a clue. If anyone remembers the Labour Government in the ’70s, where we had a 3-day week, no electricity, and high food prices.
Nope. Please check facts…that was all under Ted Heath, tory, and caused by high inflation and lower wages that could sustain the workers. As for the PIP reassessments if a person NEEDS care services they remain unaffected as does the entitlement. That would be the same if they were at home or in a care setting. If they weren’t, we’d be looking at thousands of people evicted from care settings, wouldn’t we? As for removing the money from one budget to another it actually makes sense; NHS money is ring fenced and so more money is going in, not so with benefits budget. And be very careful what you infer about your non-evidenced and potentially libellous comment about Starmer in the first line; if that gained traction and was repeated it can easily be traced back and land you in some serious trouble. Just saying.
Yeah, Conservative Prime Minister Ted Heath.
The New World Order is being orchestrated
now we have the orchestrated tariffs to
complete their agenda.
And that’s because employers have a larger margin of profit than workers have, as do most other organisations who can afford to give shareholders millions of dividends. They shut the cafe because the profit margin isn’t big enough to sustain the same level of dividends to the already rich.
Small companies are hit the same, and they simply cannot afford it.
They are crashing the economy
“You will own nothing and be happy”
I preferred Bob Seely than invisible Quigley
“We’re exploring future opportunities for the space and will keep our colleagues and customers updated.” Got a suggestion for you Sainsburys, open it as a cafe.
They could sublet it to a franchise.
Well done all you twats that voted this shower of shit in…
I agree with you, but too be honest from what I
understand it doesn’t matter who you vote for
their elite bosses still run Parliament.
I personally believe the elite created Reform to
distract voters and ensure if Reform win the next
election they will also be controlled.
Does democracy exist in the UK / WORLD
I don’t believe it does, it sounds good though.
