Oliver Mayo has taken gold in the ILCA 6 Sailing event this afternoon (Thursday).
The Isle of Wight sailor won his competion comfortably, 21.5 points ahead of his closest rival, Menorcan Ines Maria Abreu Garcia, who took silver. The bronze medallist was Will Jackson of the Caymen Islands.
Oliver has dominated the competition since the start of racing on Monday, winning 7 of his 9 races (not including 1 discarded result) and coming 2nd and 3rd in the remaining 2.
The Isle of Wight’s Oliver Smith also performed well in ICLA 6, finishing 6th in a field of 22, beating Oliver (Mayo) in the 6th race.
Oliver Mayo’s victory sees the Isle of Wight advance 1 place in the medals table to go above Gibraltar. We have now taken 7 podium places: 3 gold, 2 silver and 2 bronze.
With the result of just 1 race left to be declared, the Isle of Wight is likely to scoop all 3 sailing gold medals, with Arthur Farley appearing mathematically certain of victory in ICLA 7 and the Isle of Wight leading comfortably in the team event.
