The Royal Pier Hotel in Sandown has been handed a food hygiene rating of just 1 star after an inspection by Isle of Wight Council environmental health officers uncovered a range of hygiene, cleanliness and safety issues at the seafront premises.
The inspection, carried out on 23rd October 2025, found the Pier Street hotel performed poorly in several areas, including food safety procedures, allergen information, stock rotation and overall cleanliness.
Among the many issues listed were:
- Incomplete allergen matrices missing key legal allergens
- Poor cleaning standards throughout the kitchen and basement
- Dirty food contact surfaces, including fridges, can openers and wipe containers
- Use of expired probe wipes
- Perished seals, cracked and corroded surfaces, and missing handles on equipment
- Food storage errors including mislabelled or unlabelled cooked meats
- Defective flooring, flaking ceilings and chipped paintwork near food areas
The hotel was also criticised for failing to implement proper food safety management procedures under HACCP guidelines, with inspectors noting that required safety checks were not being documented.
Although many of the problems were addressed during or shortly after the inspection, the council has advised that a re-visit will be carried out in due course.
A formal warning included in the report states:
“Structural standards and cleaning are again poor and non-compliant as has been the case at previous inspections for which you have already been served with improvement notices. If these issues are not addressed and satisfactory standards are not maintained enforcement action may now follow”.
Island Echo has approached the hotel for comment, but at the time publication no response has been received.

Another island filth hole.
Heavy fines / closing down for such poor hygiene.
What actually gets done about this!!
It looks rough from the outside anyway. Wouldn’t stay there if you paid me? But I bet it’s not exactly cheap either? Close it down do these people not realise how dangerous it is if you have an allergy they need to show they understand about cross contamination but obviously not?
shame on you, it’s all about the money??
£145 per night between Christmas and new year apparently. You’d have thought they would have reduced this after their poor hygiene rating.
They are owned by persons of ethnicity and just like
another Sandown hotel a few years ago who were also
reported for being filthy, they too are owned by persons of
ethnicity.
I am not saying other hotels are not filthy, but this
problem is too common.
Since the pandemic you would have thought such
establishments would have cleaned up their act,
obviously NOT!!
I’m not sure what relevance it is that the owner is a ‘person of ethnicity’. What exactly are you too afraid to say?
