UPDATED: Emergency services are attending a road traffic collision between Newport and Cowes which has resulted in the closure of the main road this evening (Saturday).
The incident, which is thought to involve a motorcycle, has taken place on the A3020 Newport Road near to the County Showground.
Police and ambulance crews were alerted to the collision at just before 19:00.
The road has been closed in both directions resulting in motorists and Route 1 buses being diverted via Noke Common and Four Cross.
UPDATE @ 20:05 – The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance has landed at the scene near to Chawton Lane.
HEMS doctors and paramedics are preparing to airlift the casualty – thought to be male – to a mainland hospital.
The main Newport to Cowes road is now under a hard road closure and is expected to remain closed for several hours.
UPDATE @ 20:25 – The motorcyclist has been airlifted directly from the scene to Southampton General Hospital. His injuries are serious and traumatic, but are not thought to be life-threatening.
It has been confirmed that the motorcycle was involved in a collision with a car.
Investigations are underway into the circumstances of the crash and the road is expected to reopen by 22:00.
UPDATE @ 22:25 – Newport Road has now reopened in both directions.
Southern Vectis Route 1 buses are resuming a normal route.
UPDATE SUNDAY – Police are appealing for witnesses to yesterday’s crash to come forward.
Hampshire Constabulary have confirmed that the collision involved a Fiat 500 travelling northbound and a Suzuki motorbike travelling southbound on Newport Road.
The motorcycle rider, a 19-year-old man, has sustained a serious injury to his leg.
No arrests have been made in connection with this incident but investigations are continuing.
