Residents in East Cowes have assisted in preventing a hedge fire from spreading to a number of nearby cars this afternoon (Sunday).
1 fire appliance from Newport was mobilised to the scene earlier on today when it was reported that a fire had broken out in amongst undergrowth and a hedge.
Members of the public used buckets of water and garden hoses to tackle the fire ahead of the arrival of the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service.
Firefighters used 2 hose reels to extinguish the fire and damp down the area, preventing it from spreading to nearby vehicles.
Green Watch have praised the ‘excellent work’ of the local residents.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the River Medina, retained firefighters from Cowes have been responding to an automatic fire alarm.
1 appliance was mobilised to Cowes Enteprise College at 13:04. No signs of fire could be identified with the alarm thought to be down to a system fault.
Did some ignoramus throw a fag but into the hedge I wonder? Well done to the residents who put the fire out.
Why no response from East Cowes fire station ?.
I’m surprised that some Jack-in-office hasn’t told the public spirited residents that they should not have intervened but should have left it to the Fire Brigade. That’s usually the sort of thing that happens nowadays.
