A total of 4 affordable rental flats, specifically for veterans, could be built on derelict land in Newport.
County Hall’s community-led housing officer, John Prickett, has applied for planning permission to construct a block of 4x 1-bedroom flats at 38–40 New Street in Newport.
The proposed homes, which each include a kitchen and living area and bathroom, are classed as ‘social, affordable or intermediate rent’ housing, according to the council’s submitted application form.
Until November last year, the New Street site was used as a council-owned non-public car park.
Mr Prickett’s application form says:
“These are to be affordable, rented homes specifically for veterans.
“Each will have access from the ground level with no shared internal space.
“The building has been designed to suit the conservation area location using brick and slate construction using a bond in keeping with the street scene and windows with a horizontal emphasis.

The council’s public consultation on application 25/00953/FUL ends on 15th August and a decision has been scheduled for 9th September.

It’s surely a bit suspect/ worrying when planning permission is applied for on the basis of restrictions to who may rent the proposed premises, is it not? Are veterans ( by that I assume the proposer is referring to anyone who has served in the armed forces in any capacity) more ,of a special case than former police officers, schoolteachers or factory workers? If so, why?

Struggling to understand how something can be council owned and non public…don’t the public pay for the council!

No big secret – IWC has received a grant of £500k from the Armed Forces Covenant Trust Fund to build 4 one-bedroom flats in Newport. This funding will address the increased demand for housing among veterans on the island. The project aims to provide stable affordable housing and support veterans reintegration into the community. The Armed Forces Covenant Trust is directly supported by the MOD.
