Adverse weather has led to cross-Solent operator Red Funnel cancelling at least 2 crossings for this afternoon (Wednesday).
The company says that the 12:00 vehicle ferry sailing from Southampton and the 13:30 from East Cowes have both been cancelled due to strong winds and what they call ‘vessel limitations’.
The Red Funnel car ferry is often the last ferry service to be cancelled when adverse weather hits.
Hovertravel say that they anticipate disruption to their Ryde-Southsea service from 14:00. Wightlink is running to timetable across all services, save for the Fastcat which remains suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Red Funnel apologises for any inconvenience to your journey.
UPDATE @ 11:47 – Hovertravel has suspended its service as a result of the adverse weather. An update is expected at 14:00.

Why can’t they build ferry’s that can handle rough seas in sheltered waters like the Solent, I mean, it’s not exactly the Bay of Biscay is it….
Oh dear, another no news day. Yawn.
So very very much non news everywhere ! Where’s exciting funny amazing news gone ? It’s all literally doom gloom stay at home. Wash hands till they bleed. Keep away from everyone . Make sure you don’t upset a mask wearing in the pouring rain person that’s 3 metres away by walking too close and ruining their day and well I’m sick of the whole thing ! Sorry I’m an old 60+ misery ! Have a good day
The headline says ‘suprisingly’. Why?
Obviously not enough bookings
That’s a good thing due to the pandemic surely?
Unfortunately it is not the class of vessel, it is because Cowes harbour has a maximum wind speed limit, which if it is exceeded, ships above a certain size are not permitted to enter the harbour.
Nothing in Cowes Harbour General DIrections nor Local NtoMs about wind speed restriction – please provide a link.
Unconvincing. The forecast is no worse than this morning. Neaps so no strong tides/breakers.
Time this “service” was in public hands.
wouldn’t make any difference helen
hovercraft are licenced to a maximum operating limit in wind – it is exceeded today
cowes has a wind speed limit in the harbour for vessels of a certain size – it is exceeded
public or private no difference at all
Why not go and offer your services to pilot them in these winds and dock them ?
Apparently no road tunnels have been cancelled in the UK today!
It’s not even windy. Good lord we have become such a pathetic nation.
REALLY…… Not windy, what island are you on????
