An employee of Red Funnel has died following a lorry crash outside the firm’s Southampton ferry terminal.
The incident occurred on Thursday morning just as thousands of revellers were preparing to cross the Solent for the Isle of Wight Festival.
Police were called to a report that at approximately 05:45 a white HGV had emerged from the Red Funnel ferry terminal and collided with a set of traffic lights on Town Quay.
Sadly, despite the best efforts of the public and emergency services, the 40-year-old driver, from Bournemouth, died.
Police are now appealing for witnesses.
A spokesperson for Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has said:
“Were you in the area at the time? We would particularly like to speak to anyone with relevant dashcam footage.
“If you have any information about this incident, please report online via the police’s website or call 101, quoting reference 44230236833 Operation Gerrera.”
Fran Collins, CEO Red Funnel, commented:
“All of us at Red Funnel are shocked and saddened by the passing of our colleague on Thursday morning. We are doing all we can to support the family at this sad time.”
”I am proud of my Red Funnel colleagues, who responded compassionately and professionally throughout what was an incredibly emotional day.”
”We ask for respect of the privacy of the family during their sadness and for the feelings of our team, who have lost a colleague and friend.”

So sad hope they get to the bottom of it and see if anything can be changed to make it safer so sorry to all the family and friends
Omg, that is so sad, condolences to the family of the poor man, he’s far too young RIP X
Very sad news…heart felt sympathy’s to their family and colleagues at Red Funnel
So so sad for his family and friends and such a young age
I hope that all the people who came up with inane and pathetic comments when the story first broke are now holding their heads in shame. Somehow I don’t think they will however as their moronic brains really don’t care. Thoughts to the poor driver’s family and his work colleagues.
