A search and rescue operation was launched after a red flare was sighted in Sandown Bay during the early hours of this morning (Monday).
HM Coastguard called Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team into action at 02:45 after reports were received of a red flare being set off – an international sign for distress.
With a number of potential targets identified in The Bay, Sandown & Shanklin Independent Lifeboat was tasked to launch and hit the water at around 04:50.
The area was thoroughly searched from Shanklin to Yaverland but with nothing found and no further reports the incident was deemed a false alarm with good intent.
If you or someone else is in difficulty on the coast or at sea, or if you spot what you think may be unexploded ordnance, then dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Further safety information can be found at https://coastguardsafety.campaign.gov.uk/.
