A record-breaking £31,000 has already been raised from this year’s Swim for Hope, which saw 28 swimmers cross the Solent for Wessex Cancer Support early on Saturday morning (19th July).
The annual event – now in its 4th year – challenges participants to swim from Hurst Point to Colwell Bay at sunrise, raising vital funds for local people affected by cancer. Since launching in 2021, the swim has brought in almost £140,000 for the charity.
This year’s swimmers entered the water at 04:45, supported by a dedicated team of kayakers, safety boats and land-based volunteers, completing the crossing just over an hour later.
For a 2nd year, the event was proudly sponsored by Renodrain, with company representative Jamie Webster joining the kayak team and handing out medals at the finish line.
Laura Haytack, Regional Fundraising Manager at Wessex Cancer Support, said:
“Swim for Hope is always an incredible event – and this year was no exception. The atmosphere is unlike any other, full of nerves, excitement and an overwhelming sense of community.
“To see so many people come together for one purpose and watch the swimmers succeed with such determination was truly inspiring.”
The 2024 event has already been hailed as the most successful yet, with the fundraising total expected to rise further in the coming weeks. All money raised will help fund the emotional health and wellbeing services provided by Wessex Cancer Support.
There is already a waiting list for the 2026 swim, with those interested encouraged to pre-register now.
