Raw meat being stored in unlabelled carrier bags and foodstuffs being stored at above-limit temperatures – these were just a few of the issues found at Ryde’s Navam Tandoori takeaway, which has been slapped with a 1-star rating.
Environmental Health officers from the Isle of Wight Council visited the premises on the 6th March and found that food handling, cleanliness and recordkeeping practices fell significantly below required standards.
Items such as chicken tikka, lamb biryani and mussels were being stored at temperatures over 10c – well above the safe limit of 8c – raising concerns about bacterial growth and food safety.
Numerous ready-to-eat dishes were found in the fridge without any labels to show preparation or use-by dates. Opened tins and the lack of any stock rotation system also prompted inspectors to call for immediate improvements.
The report also raised concerns about:
- Failure to carry out safe cooking temperature checks
- Fridge and freezer records that were inaccurate or misunderstood
- A food handler lacking basic food hygiene knowledge
- Damaged kitchen fittings including taps, shelving and a microwave
- Heavy scoring on chopping boards preventing effective cleaning
Inspectors found that the premises lacked access to hot water at both the wash hand basin and the equipment sink. Although the business agreed to close voluntarily to resolve the plumbing issue, problems persisted during a follow-up visit.
The business was also unable to demonstrate traceability of its food sources due to decanting items like raw chicken into plain bags without labels. This lack of documentation also extended to its HACCP procedures, with key food safety documents unavailable for inspection.
Officers noted that while the owner held a Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate, the food handler present during the inspection showed limited understanding of safe practices and required instruction during the visit.
A sign in the window of Navam Tandoori – located on High Street in the town – states the establishment was previously handed a 4-star rating.
Food Hygiene Rating – Scores on the Doors
Compliance with food hygiene and safety procedures – 15
Compliance with structural requirements – 15
Confidence in management/control procedures – 20
Total score: 50 (1 rating)
Island Echo has approached Navam Tandoori for comment but at the time of publication, no response has been received.

They need to check the other take aways along that road. Raw meat in buckets at the back, food left out on the sides and disgusting filth everywhere. A bloody health hazard and no thought for the fools that buy food there.
I don’t even trust some of the establishments
who have 5 stars, just look at many of the employees
they employ.
I wouldn’t want them making me a drink yet alone
cook me a meal.
There are not many establishments who I trust.
Pure filth, the only tandoori takeaway / restaurant food
I would eat, is from a Supermarket.
Good luck with anywhere else.
Errrrr deport them
They would arrive back on our shores via a
dinghy and be put up in a 5 star hotel.
Why would they? That’s clearly not the route they came by. It’s an INDIAN takeaway. See if you can work out how they came to be here.
I was actually joking
Lol
Too be honest it is nice seeing more culture on
the island, the island as been lacking such for
years.
I love the Premier shops, they are open much
longer than other island shops and provide a
great service at great prices.
Also if they haven’t got something you want, just
ask them and they will get it for you
I can’t imagine Mr Smith doing the same.
Hopefully we can get a one star discount now
Too many places have no idea about cleanliness
Hopefully we can get a one star discount now.
It should now be closed down, it looks dirty just from the pics of the outside let alone what it probably looks like inside! Disgusting
Environmental Health Officers need to visit all island
food establishments.
I wonder how many have been missed.
“The business was also unable to demonstrate traceability of its food sources due to decanting items like raw chicken into plain bags without labels.”
Alarm bells!
I dread to think where they source their food from.
Should be immediately closed down.
Not really, it will be in their accounts and invoices, which is not accessible to EH staff.
I see that you are all blaming these idiots, well it seems that YOU ALL are to blame, for using these places in the first place. surely you don’t expect a half decent meal to come out of premises like these. If you want a decent curry, then go to one of the big restaurants that have a score of 5. If they are clean, they will not object to you taking a look inside of their kitchen.
If a food outlet scores less than 4 it should be shut down until it is sorted, if a score of 0 or 1 it should be closed permanently, bacteria in raw chicken can kill not just give you an upset stomach
