A wanted male who was pursued through the streets of Sandown by Police when he made a run for it at lunchtime today (Wednesday) has been taken into custody.
PCSO Webb spotted the 53-year-old suspect in the town shortly after midday. But before the male could be detained a pursuit began when he made a run for it.
It didn’t take long for the Police Community Support Officer to catch up though – he was equipped with one of the South Wight Neighbourhood Policing Team’s electric bicycles.
The short pursuit came to an end on York Road, where officers from the Armed Response team moved in to make an arrest.
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary has confirmed that a 53-year-old man from Sandown has been arrested in connection with a number of ongoing investigations.
The male is currently detained on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon, in relation to an incident at Premier Inn in Sandown on 27th September when it’s alleged that members of staff were threatened with a dog lead.
He has also been arrested on suspicion of theft, in relation to an incident yesterday (Tuesday) where it’s alleged bottles of Stella were stolen from Poundland in Newport – and possession of cannabis.
He remains in custody at this time.
UPDATE THURSDAY – 53-year-old Matthew Lewendon has been charged and remanded in custody.
