“Shopkeepers deserve protection from the court” – those are the words of Magistrates who have sent prolific thief Warren Russell back to prison for at least the 4th time.
39-year-old Russell, of Howard House in Newport, pleaded guilty to attempted theft from a shop and theft from a shop when he appeared at the Isle of Wight Magistrates Court last Tuesday (5th September).
It was heard in court that on 30th August, Russell stole Lego sets from Toymaster in Ryde to the value of £132. Then, just a few days later, on 4th September, he attempted to steal screwdrivers to the value of £7 from B&M in Newport.
It was only back in May that Warren Russell was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison for stealing alcohol, food, electrical items and beauty products in April and May of this year. At the start of the year, in February, the 39-year-old was sentenced to 20 weeks in prison for similar theft offences.
In March 2022, Russell was sent to prison for a drug-fuelled crime spree in The Bay. But he was back out within weeks and went on to commit crimes in July, August, September, October, November and December of that year. It was in December that he was handed an 8-week prison sentence, which was suspended for 12 months.
Warren Russell is now back behind bars having been given a 22-week prison sentence.
Magistrates have described Russell as a prolific offender, who has continued to commit crimes even once given accommodation and other assistance.

If I ruled the country there would be a law.
First offence you lose your hand.
Second offence a leg.
I’d keep going until there was nothing left of them.
No anaesthetic, just a sharp axe.
Crime would go down faster than you can write a reply exclaiming it’s against their human rights and they deserve a second chance.
No second chance, no first chance either.
These people are a waste of oxygen, and a burden on society.
Get rid of them.
What about the people who our proven innocent after a significant period of time?
I expect Sloopy will be happy to have his body parts lopped off in case of mistaken identity in the name of “The Greater Good” (cf Hot Fuzz).
As long as overall crime goes down he’ll be happy.
Won’t you, Sloopy?
The positives far outweigh the negatives.
I would give them a false hand.
3 people dislike my idea to clean up the country. They must support crime in their area.
They won’t support crime, just don’t support your draconian ideas.
No, you’d be losing your own real hand for a crime you were falsely accused of.
You OK with that?
Your country already exists and it is called Saudi Arabia. Get on the next flight John for the land of your dreams.
Some Saudi laws needs to come here Hamad Samir.
Zippy they are not Draconian ideas, think of the people put off of committing a crime if they face losing a hand.
If the man in the story went for a swim he would now be called Bob.!
John Smith there’s always mistakes as the police are overwhelmed with crime reports, but with the new low crime rate due to me running the country they would be able to do a better job with zero mistakes.
insufferable overly-opinionated boomers like you are worse for the island than any shoplifter
Look at the comments from others, kick him off a cliff, a leach, can’t help him, kick the effing shite out of him etc.
Nobody likes this thief, he is a waste of space.
Had I been running the country when he first committed an offence then his life would be better, peoples homes and shops would not have been burgled, and taxpayers would not be funding his current lifestyle.
I can not believe that you support this one man crime wave.
i’m very glad that you are not in a position of power – although you seem to have the same backwards 1990s mentality as the local council
There are just some people you just cannot help, and he is one of them. quite simply a pain in the backside who will show respect for nothing and bring misery to all. Prison is no deterrent and will simply prove to be a school for further crime.
A leach on society , he will probably be out way before the 22 weeks and be be back to his usual thieving
When all options have been tried and failed, whatever option is left, is the correct course of action.
as they have tried asking him, pleading with him, giving him a home, money, assistance, then fining him, banning him, giving him unpaid work, courses and jail time with no success, there is only one other course of action left – kick the effing shite out of him, so that he no longer has the ability to actually steal anything for months, at least and then say – steal another thing and we will kick f^ck out of you again.
Give him a life sentence. He won’t have to steal again…
It’s good for some isn’t it
This piece of garbage needs throwing off the cliff to stop being a stain on society.
This piece of garbage needs throwing off the cliff instead of being a stain on society
So lives in the homeless shelter I suggest they kick him out and let him live on the streets
He actually got kicked out homeless shelter for drug dealing
I get all the “lets grab our pitchforks and run him off the Island” (or worse), but in all seriousness what do you do with people who will not stop breaking the law, they obviously can’t be rehabilitated to be a useful member of society. Suppose he will just ping pong in and out of prison for the rest of his life at the tax payers expense.
They should have banned him from entering any shop on the island for a decade. He understands what he’s doing, he also knows nothing can be done to him to deter him. The one thing which will deter him is not even legal, but what they should do is take 50% of any income he gets at give it to charity. So any benefit money is sanctioned at source of the 50%, any bank account, any online money account and money from any other source should be hit with the 50% sanction before he gets his hands on it. The ONLY thing that will make him think twice is him having his own money taken from him, without his consent. 10 years of that and let’s see if he’s still smirking.
Put him in a dingy (we have plenty) and dump him off Calais.
And when the filth gets out it will be no time before it is stealing again, lock it up and throw the key away.
The problem is he’s a drug addict which has taken over his life and until he gets locked up for long enough to wean him off of the drugs his mini crime spree will continue to fuel the drug habit in a never ending downward spiral onto harder drugs until eventually he dies of an overdose.
It’s a pretty sad story of what drug addiction can do to a life.
yep – there are only two outcomes for this clown
he continues with his drug addiction and dies an early death, just like all the others, or he quits the drugs and has a better chance at a longer, better life.
Put him in a room with every drug possible and let him take the lot.
3rd offence should be prison for 5 years in my opinion. If they offend again on release give them another 5 years.
Problem is we will need bigger prisons.
