Cowes-based Solent Cruises has been named the winner of the prestigious Maritime Legacy Award at the 2025 Maritime Solent Awards, held at the Hilton Southampton Utilita Bowl.
The award was presented posthumously to the company’s founder, Mark Rayment, who established Solent Cruises more than 60 years ago and passed away last year.
The accolade recognises individuals and organisations that have made an outstanding contribution to the maritime sector across the Solent region.
Mark Rayment’s lifelong dedication to maritime excellence was reflected through his commitment to training young people, offering opportunities to school leavers and apprentices on the Isle of Wight. Known for his passion for the sea, Mark also promoted safety within the industry, serving on several maritime safety boards, including one formed following the Marchioness disaster.
Throughout his career, Mark grew Solent Cruises into a leading maritime business, expanding its fleet to provide sightseeing cruises, harbour tours, and private charters across the Solent. His ‘welcoming manner and dulcet tones’ over the PA system became a hallmark of the company’s tours and remain fondly remembered by many.
Today, Solent Cruises continues under the leadership of Mark’s daughter, Ali, and son, Lee.
Ali Rayment, Managing Director, has said:
“It’s a really proud moment for us and the whole team, the award given in memory of our Dad, Mark. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone who has travelled with us, attended one of our events, or hired one of our vessels.
“We’d also like to give a huge thank you to our amazing team, who work so hard to make Solent Cruises what it is today.”
The Maritime Legacy Award marks a fitting tribute to Mark Rayment’s lifelong passion for the maritime community and his lasting impact on the Solent’s rich seafaring heritage.
