Beachgoers are being warned about oil on the shore between Sandown and Shanklin following the sinking of a boat this morning (Sunday).
The vessel has gone under the waves just a couple of hundred metres out to sea around half way between the 2 seaside towns.
Ventnor Coastguard Rescue Team were tasked to the scene earlier today to assess the situation. It comes after a tasking to the same vessel just a couple of days ago.
Warning signs about oil on the beach have now been erected by Isle of Wight Council contractors.
Island Echo understands around 50 litres of red diesel and 5 litres of engine oil could be leaking into the sea. However, it is expected to disperse quickly.
It is unclear at this stage what the next steps are to reduce the pollution risk and salvage the wreck.
Why didn’t the life boat crew tow it into the nearest harbour two days ago when they were first called out to help the stricken vessel! Just asking ?
