Residents on the Isle of Wight will pay an average of £15 more a year for their Police service.
Funding from the government was not as high as the constabulary had hoped for, so now residents are being forced to pick up the bill.
It is promised some of the extra money will pay for 50 more Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary police officers, £9million of new investment and address the inflationary cost pressures. The Island will receive a cut of £30million to upgrade the existing police estate as well as ‘new and re-aligned estate’ on the Island.
Other investments will include new technology so police can spend more time in the communities they serve and continue the fight against cybercrime.
The 6.3% increase was agreed on Friday by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police and Crime Panel. Bills will rise between £10 and £30, depending on the property banding.
Last year, the precept rose by £10 for a Band D property and it currently stands at £236.46. The average Band D property will rise to £251.46.
The amount payable towards the precept now (and how much it has gone up) is:
- Band A – £167.64 – £10
- Band B – £195.58 – £11.67
- Band C – £223.52 – £13.33
- Band D – £251.46 – £15
- Band E – £307.34 – £18.33
- Band F – £363.22 – £21.67
- Band G – £419.10 – £25
- Band H – £502.92 – £30

I’m not paying it my council tax when it rises, its about time we all stood up to these greedy, pocket lining, corrupt councillors. Stop being snowflakes and stand up to them.
We all know these are just empty words and you will be paying your CT like everyone else.
On the off chance that you do withhold payment, I look forward to you being publicly named and shamed in these very pages.
More (full of) sh1tflake than snowflake, aren’t you?
That’s ok by me.all I ask is to sort out the problems with drink&drug driving. We all take a risk while on the roads.it needs sorting out. It’s generally a big problem.
should use same policy as Guernsey for drink driving
that will cut a lot of it out
with most cars having no mot no tax no ins drink driving drug driving crashing speeding and lots more that island needs policing so it should be £35 not £15
Apart from brief “crackdowns”, coincidentally just before the precept is agreed, on the island we have an under manned and dysfunctional police force.
It was said by a senior officer that there were only 1 sergeant and 8 pc’s to cover the whole of the island.
We called the police at 03:30 on Friday night to a group of drunken scum on Ryde Esplanade who were vandalising street furniture and throwing road barriers and a rubbish bin cover into the roadway, 1 officer responded and made no attempt to contact the culprits despite knowing where they were, he did put the cover back on the bin and drove off leaving them to carry on screaming and shouting, incidentally it is the same group every Friday night.
Load of old rainbow nonsense..
Absolutely disgusting and unacceptable. We get nothing for all these precept rises, policing on the island is woeful. It is time that we all stood up to these increases and refused to pay them.
Less than inflation it seems? So not bad. Plus, once all those “Brexit dividends” will finally start flowing to UK, I’m sure central government will send more money ;)))
Households struggling financially. Meanwhile, County council, town councils, fire and Police all adding to the burden.
Censorship seems to be rife on the Echo at the moment. Shame on you.
I don’t think the that the police force deserve a pay rise……
After all, it is nothing but a lifestyle choice.
Same as alcoholics and drugys and Politicians.
Why don’t we have a choice? Rather have £15 less police than pay it.
Never have so many been charged for so few
You got to be joking, they hardly do anything here, they have got to be the laziest police force in the UK.
Bloody heck!!! I will have to do a few burglaries to be able to afford that. We are being robbed to pay for their wages.
Absolute disgrace, Police cover on the Island is poor, drugs and knives are everywhere and yet we are expected to pay more, next we will hear that the the comedians, who call themselves councillors will want to increase council tax by five percent and in the next breath will grant themselves a rise of more than five percent.
It’s time that the number of councillors was cut by at least fifty percent, and the remainder should have there expenses capped.
Where do the people who set these increases think that we can get the money from to pay. People’s wages are not going up at this rate nor are pensions, the only thing that is going up at this rate or more is the cost of heating and lighting our homes and the cost of food!!
You seem to think that the Whitehall mafia, either the red or blue gangs, care and will do something. There is only one option for the people left. This coming century is going to get harder, a lot darker and a lot more draconian. I hope you’re ready, the storm is here.
Odds on my friend it’ll go up 5%, as for councillors they should be voluntree with allowances
Increase for doing what exactly ? You hardly see them patrol the streets anymore . If you need them it takes hours to turn up. You see the odd traffic van doing speed checks now and again. The police stations are only part time . You see them occasionally doing a bit of shopping in tesco Honestly this country are bleeding the working class dry .
I saw 2 Community Police in Regent Street Shanklin
Land Rover parked fully on pavement with double yellow lines
outside the church nr Yummy Tummy’s.
Parked for over 10 minutes, no ticket issued.
Too be honest I don’t think they know how to issue a ticket.
They are taking the easy option £15 off all Households.
They could earn extra revenue by fining all the vehicles that turn into the Street
that has a NO Right turn sign off of Brading High Street into West Street.
Also they could take a walk along Regent Street in Shanklin and fine all the
Vehicles parked in the loading bay opposite Chubby’s Fish and chip shop and the
Vehicles parked on the pavement outside Yummy Tummy’s
There are so many opportunities to make money, it means having to get out of a
Vehicle and actually do some work.
Don’t keep taking from Council Taxes.
I know what a police car looks like but could anybody tell me how I would recognise a policeman?
If you are lucky enough to see one on foot it is almost certain he has forgotten where he parked his car and is just wandering around trying to find it.
They usually have a takeaway in their hand.
Just how many of the police officers actually live on the island rather than spend each day coming over and returning in their vehicles by ferry which must cost a fortune and take up time which could be spent policing
Garry my thoughts too.
Not only are hours lost due to travelling time, the extorninate ferry costs etc.
They should all be Island based.
It is too easy to keep taking off the Tax Payer.
The problem we have is the Government who take our taxes employ the police.
The Government should use the money tney have from other sources, not keep
letting councils increase our Council Taxes.
Someone has got to fund their big pay off and pension wish I could retire at 55
What police service. You call them about a load of smackheads gobbing off at 3.00am in the morning, and when they decide to turn up, if at all, the scum have all buggered off. Either that or they want you to fill in an online form. Plenty of easy nicks catching motorists while the low life does as it likes.
Absolutely disgusting, don’t see the point in paying more for a service, because when you do contact them because of an incident, you receive a letter 7 days later stating ” sorry but because of resources and your not in immediate danger then we’re not pursuing the incident ” even though a crime is still a crime. I even had cctv proof of the person doing the crime but still nothing. Absolute joke…
Don’t mind paying as long as all the money paid is not shared with Hampshire – that county has more than enough police to patrol. We need to bring back our own police force onto the Island and funded by Island. This merger with Hampshire doesn’t appear to work in our favour with limited numbers stationed on the Island.
Speechless !
What a load of rubbish what EXACTLY do the police do here – nothing because you never see them.
Perhaps council tax payers should join the band wagon and go on strike
REALLY do away with the police on the island use vigilante groups then you watch the crime rate go down police don’t police anymore there just in there BMWs flying around the island joke
